ARCHITEKT stellt die Annahme infrage, der Städtebau der DDR sei ein rationales Gemeinschaftsprojekt gewesen. Am Beispiel Leipzigs der 1970er-Jahre zeigt die Ausstellung ein konfliktreiches Geflecht aus politischen Vorgaben, bürokratischen Routinen und architektonischen Ambitionen. Die vermeintliche Planmäßigkeit erweist sich als rückblickende Konstruktion.
Das kammerspielartige Format dient als analytisches Instrument. In drei Akten – Funktion gegen Fantasie, Ordnung gegen Freiheit, Staat gegen Individuum – wird deutlich, dass die Trennung von Architektur und Macht ein Mythos ist. Die fiktive Wohnung über der Stadt schafft Distanz zur historischen Realität; die Figuren fungieren als Reflexionsflächen, nicht als Repräsentanten.
Am Matthäikirchhof wird das geordnete Chaos des Systems exemplarisch sichtbar. Modelle und Dokumente erscheinen als Material eines offenen Gutachtens und laden zum Zweifel ein. Der Epilog zeigt, dass das Ungebaute weniger an mangelnder Kühnheit scheiterte als an einem System, das vor eigenen Zukunftsbildern zurückschreckte.
ARCHITEKT challenges the assumption that urban planning in the GDR was a rational collective project. Focusing on Leipzig in the 1970s, the exhibition reveals a complex interplay of political directives, bureaucratic routines, and architectural ambitions, exposing the fragility of the planning narrative. What appears systematic emerges instead as a retrospective construction.
Structured as a chamber play in three acts—function versus imagination, order versus freedom, state versus individual—the exhibition demonstrates that architecture and power cannot be separated. A fictional apartment above the city creates distance from historical reality, allowing the figures to function as tools of reflection rather than representation.
Using the Matthäikirchhof as a case study, ARCHITEKT presents models and documents as material for open inquiry. The epilogue suggests that what remained unbuilt failed less through lack of ambition than through a system unwilling to confront its own visions of the future.
